Optimize Ubiquiti Unifi Wireless Performance

Make: Ubiquiti
Model: Unifi UAP-nanoHD, U6-LR, U6-Light, UAP-AC-HD, etc
Version: 5.8.24, 6.0.15, 6.55, 7.44 etc
Description: This article is to discuss some methods or steps to optimize the Ubiquiti Unifi Wireless Performance.

Generally, we face some connectivity and stability issues over the wireless connections and here we will try to either resolve or at least minimise the connectivity issues. Follow the steps and methods mentioned here to increase the performance of wireless connectivity.

Firmware

Ensure to upgrade the firmware of the access point to the latest supported version. The latest firmware keeps the bugs and known issues away. Refer to the article if the firmware upgrade is failing.

Global Access Point Settings

Follow the below mentioned recommendation to improve the connectivity

  • Ensure Channel Width is properly configured
    • 2.4GHz is set to 20MHz
    • 5GHz is set to 80MHz
  • Set the Transmit Power configuration as below
    • 2.4GHz = Medium transmit power
    • 5GHz = High transmit power
  • Disable Wireless Meshing
  • Do not exclude any access points. Ensure Wireless Exclusion is empty
  • Ensure Nightly Channel Optimization (Channel Optimization) is disabled

Radio Settings

  • 2.4GHz Radio settings
    • Set the channel to 1, 6 or 11
    • Uncheck the box of Enable Minimum RSSI
  • 5GHz Radio settings
    • Set the channel to 36, 52, 100 or 149
    • Set Enable Minimum RSSI to -70dBm

Advanced Configuration

Refer to the below recommendation to improve the stability and connectivity

  • Set Wi-Fi band to 2.4GHz & 5GHz
  • Enable Band Steering
  • Disable Multicast Enhancement
  • Disable Multicast and Broadcast Control
  • Keep Client Device Isolation disabled
  • Ensure Proxy ARP is disabled
  • Enable BSS Transition
  • Set 802.11 DTIM period to Auto
  • Ensure Security Protocol is set to WAP2
  • Keep PMF disabled
  • Keep Group Rekey Interval disable
  • Use Multicast DNS setting as per requirement
  • Enable IGMP Snooping
  • Disable Jumbo Frames
  • Disable Flow Control
  • Ensure Spanning Tree is disabled
  • Use 802.1x settings as per requirement

Do not forget to click “Apply” to save the changes. Above mentioned all steps are recommended for better stability and wi-fi connectivity. These can vary depending on the setup in your home or organisation.
